Today it is fashionable to have some unusual, exotic animals as pets. People treat the search for a small animal much more closely and carefully than, for example, choosing a car. No one can be surprised by a rare breed of dog, a striped raccoon, or a creeping amphibian. So, one of the unusual animals a pet is the otter. She conquers with her touching appearance, and mobility and gives the impression of a restless merry fellow. What can such a desirable acquisition for your house or apartment turn into? You should familiarize yourself with the features and nuances of its keeping at home.

The otter is a small graceful animal from the weasel family. An adult individual reaches a length of 50-100 cm and weighs up to 6-10 kg. The body is flexible and has a streamlined shape, and the membranes are clearly expressed on the paws. Fur is the only form of protection against hypothermia, it is thick and dense, and practically does not get wet. This species is classified as vulnerable and has been included in the International Red Book.

The otter belongs to the type of animal that has mastered a semi-aquatic lifestyle. She perfectly manifests herself as a diver and swimmer, while she does not mind calmly walking along the shore of a reservoir. The main habitats of the animal are rivers near wooded areas since these areas do not suffer from a shortage of fish. Less commonly, otters live on sea coasts, in caves, or in washed-out waters.

The otter is distinguished by its endurance, it can easily survive long frosts, as it leads a nomadic lifestyle. In search of food in winter, she can run up to 20 km. The animal feeds mainly on fish. The most favorite delicacy are roach, carp, pike, and small fish. In the absence of fish, it can feed on frogs, rodents, ducks, and waders.
