It’s a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus, called endometrium, starts growing outside the uterus. This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other organs in the pelvic area.
Endometriosis can cause symptoms like severe pelvic pain, especially during periods, heavy menstrual bleeding, and discomfort during intercourse. It can also lead to infertility for some women. These symptoms happen because the misplaced tissue still behaves like the uterine lining—it thickens, breaks down, and bleeds with each menstrual cycle, but has no way to exit the body, causing pain and inflammation.
Diagnosing endometriosis often requires imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI, and in some cases, a minor surgery called laparoscopy. Treatment options include pain management, hormone therapy, or surgery to remove the tissue, depending on the severity and the woman's goals, like managing pain or improving fertility."
