4 1/4 miles long at a gradient mainly between 1:45 and 1:65 Rattery is the 7th steepest bank on the UK mainline and one of the longest. I could feel the brakes being applied for much of the descent, and they must have been very hot by the time we pulled up in Totnes; I could smell them! To put the gradients in persrpective, the steepest on the ECML is 1:78 on the approach to Edinburgh and Stoke Bank is a mere 1:200, and on the ECML Shap and Beattock are about 1:75.
