In this episode of our New Orleans travel vlog we are visiting a place that has a special place in my heart but sadly this location is breaking my heart these days. We are visiting Café Reconcile on a travel search for the best burger and po’boy options in New Orleans. Café Reconcile is a special place with a special mission that provides workforce development and training to young people ages 16 to 24 years old who learn skills in the restaurant industry from participating in the program here. Café Reconcile is located at 1631 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard which is about 2 miles and 11 minutes away from the New Orleans French Quarter. Before Hurricane Katrina I worked directly across the street and I would eat here nearly every weekday and I knew most of the folks that worked at Café Reconcile. In those days there would often be a line to get into Café Reconcile and it was also much more of a dive environment back in those days as well. In the years since Katrina Café Reconcile continued on as it had for awhile and they even received additional funding which allowed them to vastly improve their building into the nice spot it is currently. Unfortunately, as more money came in with the resulting impressive physical improvements happening to the building, I started to notice a decrease in how the program seemed to be working for the young people in the program. I used to see lots of familiar faces who worked as staff members and as program participants when I ate here but in a short time I soon saw fewer and fewer familiar faces as the program became much shorter in duration. While the service in the restaurant greatly suffered the food quality endured until recently with the arrival of a new chef who totally changed the long standing menu. There are no longer any lines to get into Café Reconcile and I have to say I simply no longer find the food appealing and the same opinion holds true for many people I know who used to love eating here. We still continue our best burger and poboy quest as first we feast with me through the New Orleans restaurants for the best New Orleans food at the best New Orleans restaurants. In our restaurant review videos we show you the best food New Orleans has inside New Orleans best restaurants.
