It is the largest museum of Polynesian cultural artifacts and natural history specimens in the world.

Founded and built in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop, who was a businessman and philanthropist during the time, built the museum in memory of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who was the last legal heir of the Kamehameha Dynasty, Kingdom of Hawaii. The museum has the most extensive collections of books, periodicals, newspapers and special collections that featured stories of native Hawaiian and the Pacific histories. These series of collections are meant to trace the origins of the Polynesians, their languages, cultures, lifestyles, and economies.
