Описание к видео Why Explicit Discussion of Values is Important, Necessary, & Significant in Defining an Economy

Economics of Sustainability: Six-Week Learning Series

Facilitated by Madhavi Venkatesan Ph.D, author of Economic Principles: A Primer: A Framework for Sustainable Practices

Hosted on February 12, 2021 at 6:30pm. The Blue Marble Librarians, Sturgis Library, and Sustainable Practices hosted this discussion facilitated by Dr. Madhavi Venkatesan on "Why Explicit Discussion of Values is Important, Necessary, & Significant in Defining an Economy" as the fifth talk in a six-part learning series on the Economics of Sustainability.

Description:

We all live and participate within an economic system. However, what is not often contemplated is how our economic system affects all aspects of our life from what we pursue (our purpose) to how we consume and most importantly how we view the environment and stewardship. These latter aspects are implicit in our choices but often overlooked. This is why understanding how our economy works can provide the foundation to not only promoting interest in social justice, environmental justice and economic equity, the three pillars of sustainability; but also in aligning our culture to better reflect our individual values. For example, our happiness is proxied on our income in our present economic framework but income though necessary is not sufficient. Profits are determined by how much is sold but this may not be reflective of the holistic costs of production (i.e. pollution), which by inclusion could reduce returns and highlight the reduction in the quality of life. This series will address economic literacy and the relationship between our economic actions and economic outcomes. The discussions are meant to both assess and empower individual behavior and the potential for social change.

About the Speaker:

Madhavi Venkatesan is an academic economist and environmental activist. She earned doctorate, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in economics from Vanderbilt University, a master’s in sustainability and environmental management from Harvard University, and a master’s in environmental law and policy from Vermont Law School. In 2019 she published her fourth text, SDG8 – Sustainable Economic Growth and Decent Work for All. She is presently under contract with Routledge to write SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production and her text, Economics of Sustainability is scheduled to be published by Springer in late 2020.
In 2016, Madhavi established Sustainable Practices, a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission “to facilitate a culture of sustainability as defined by reducing the human-made impact to the planet and its ecosystems” within Barnstable County, Massachusetts and is the organization’s executive director.
