About the presentation

Microinsurance (M-insurance) is insurance delivered through a mobile phone network. The recent rise in mobile phone technology, together with the uptake and use of mobile wallet platforms like M-Pesa, have allowed M-insurance to scale to low-income populations in the developing world, where health insurance coverage has historically been very low. In Kenya, for example, roughly 80% of the population remain uninsured, and out-of-pocket payments due to negative health events can be catastrophic to patients and their families.

A focus of the talk will be Microensure, a private social business that provides health insurance to low-income individuals in low and middle income countries. The talk will include an overview of microinsurance, background context of related health policies in Kenya, and a discussion of Microensure’s trajectory of providing health insurance products to clients in Kenya, beginning in 2002 with the launch of their first health insurance product, to present day. This talk goes beyond a study of health insurance and tackles issues that are relevant to human behavior, social entrepreneurship, and the role of technology in health systems strengthening in low and middle income countries.
