Usually on Application Renovation, it's not too hard for me to find some big weaknesses in the student's application. Today's case is a bit more challenging. Watch as I give feedback to a student who was rejected from med school with a 3.7 GPA, 515 MCAT, and honestly a pretty good app overall.

This week's student applied to around 20 medical schools. She received 1 interview invite and 0 acceptances. She thinks her weakness may have been telling her story.

As we walk through her full AMCAS application, I discuss:

• The extra question in my mind when I see that a med school applicant's parents are in healthcare.
• What activities to choose for your Most Meaningful Experiences.
• Why your application shouldn't focus on statements showing what you know about medicine.
• How to count the hours for an extracurricular living situation like being in a sorority.
• Why I highly recommend NOT using shadowing as a "seed watering" event in your personal statement.
• Why I recommend avoiding the phrase "healthcare provider" in your personal statement.
• Why I don't like mentioning being thanked in a personal statement.
• How she wasted space in the conclusion of her personal statement.
• Why I recommend avoiding humor altogether in your med school application, and how it may have hurt her app.
• Why she may have wasted about a third of her school list.

After getting through her app, we also discuss:

• How much medical schools expect you to change in your app when you reapply.
• What's the ideal time to take the MCAT? What's too late in the cycle?
• How I recommend putting together your school list.

We also take a look at her secondary essays—something we've never done on Application Renovation before this!
