Archaeology: Material Culture, Archaeological Theory

An introduction to the theoretical concept in archaeology of Material Culture and how the discipline evolved over the last few decades. The video discusses the influence of Marxism and the key contributors, Arjun Appadurai, Daniel Miller and the Material Culture Group at the University College London.

A basic overview of the theoretical approaches and concepts of Material Culture, and the advocacy that Objects Matter and have Lives of their own. The video explains how Material Culture uses inter-disciplinary subjects such as anthropology, philosophy and sociology to examine contemporary consumption, which can then be applied to the study of past societies.
