China is constructing a massive laser-ignited fusion research center in Mianyang, southwestern China, as part of its rapidly expanding nuclear weapons program. Satellite images have revealed this colossal facility, which is designed similarly to the U.S. National Ignition Facility (NIF) in California, known for its work in nuclear fusion research. China’s nuclear program, shrouded in secrecy since the 1950s, has seen significant growth, with the number of operational warheads rising by over 100 to more than 600 in recent years. This expansion has raised alarm in the United States and other nations, fearing China may be aiming to challenge their strategic dominance. The new Mianyang center, officially called the Laser Fusion Major Device Laboratory, is the world’s largest of its kind, 50% larger than NIF, and allows for advancements in nuclear fusion reactions, potentially enhancing weapons designs without explosive testing.
