When looking to video gaming as a whole there were a ton of games that meant at least something for a particular genre or franchise. We actually try kicking this up a notch by picking a limited amount of games that were essential for the evolution of video games as a medium and brought video games to the point where it stands now. An impossible task, but hey, let's just give it a go. This is part one of 10 legendary video games that changed the industry. And remember, these are not necessarily the best games or first games embodying a certain feature.

Half Life: Counter-Strike

Off course online gaming is probably the most popular form of gaming nowadays, but this all somewhat started with the rise of Counter-Strike. This brilliant mod for Half Life gave players the opportunity to excessively battle it out online. Video gaming almost became somewhat of a sport with the rise of clans and competitive tournaments. Lan-parties have never been the same again as the competition moved from local area networks to the internet.

Super Mario Bros

The release of the NES and Super Mario Bros meant the medium's successful recovery after the crash the video game market went through in 1983. Super Mario Bros boasts quality but foremost introduced a lot of smart and indispensable game elements, like a game world that went beyond the borders of the screen and an actual level system. Super Mario Bros was the beginning of Nintendo's success and before we knew it the name of the Japanese company became synonymous for video gaming as a whole.

Dune 2

The most popular in gaming today is the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre or better known as MOBA. The genre is considered a subgenre of the RTS genre, which started all with the release of Dune 2. Westwood Studios created an amazing game that functioned as the blueprint for decades to come. Series like Command and Conquer, Starcraft and Age of Empires would have looked very different without the existence of this game.

Tetris

Tetris was a puzzle game bundled with the first Gameboy. Due to its addicting nature, Tetris was a huge hit and became single handedly responsible for the rise of handheld gaming making the Gameboy system a must have. It also functioned as a blueprint for puzzle games for years to come and deserves its legendary status in our opinion.

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft brought the MMORPG genre to the masses and is still after more then ten years the most popular non-freemium game in the genre. The game was kept fresh by a set of great expansions and a new updated engine which makes it look like the game will be around for quite a while. World of Warcraft grew out to be more then just a game. World of Warcraft became a cultural phenomenon harbored an extensive community that consumed the lives of millions of gamers.
