5: The effects of folding and faulting on Singapore bedrock, including the resulting rock types and structures. (Dr Graham Leslie)

Dr Graham Leslie is a Senior Mapping Geologist with the British Geological Survey (BGS) who has also taught, trained, and mentored students and researchers in several UK universities. He has over 30 years of experience in primary mapping, structural geology and geophysics. Graham led BGS’s fieldwork investigations in Singapore and the review and development of the new structural framework. He also was instrumental in helping to develop the new stratigraphical framework for Singapore. Graham is the lead author of the new BCA geological maps and memoir and co-author of the Practitioners’ guide to the bedrock geology.

Between 2012 and 2017 BCA commissioned a deep ground-investigation programme across Singapore comprising more than: 100 boreholes drilled to depths of 200m; 40 km of seismic reflection and refraction survey; and analysis of over 2,200 rock and soil samples.

Research conducted by the British Geological Survey (BGS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on these borehole cores, and at 235 outcrops across the mainland and outlying islands, has resulted in a substantially revised interpretation of the geology of Singapore. Key outcomes of the research have been:
• the development of a new ‘geological framework’ for Singapore, within which all the bedrock and superficial deposits in the country are divided into named units;
• a new understanding of the age and spatial distribution of those units;
• a fuller understanding of the character and features found within each unit;
• and greater appreciation of the distribution and variability of properties, resources and hazards likely to be encountered in Singapore’s subsurface.

BCA intend that the new geological framework is formally adopted by the Civil Engineering Industry in Singapore from November 2022. A new geological map, geological memoir and practitioners’ guide have been published by BCA to aid the understanding and adoption of the new geological framework.

In this Webinar, the British Geological Survey (BGS) will present the new geological framework for Singapore and show how this revised geological understanding can affect current and future urban development works.
