Japanese patchwork bag 'happy bag (Shiawase bag)'

Описание к видео Japanese patchwork bag 'happy bag (Shiawase bag)'

Thank you for watching!
These patchwork bags were mainly made in 19-20th century. The materials they used were often remnants of silk crape Kimono fabric called ‘Chirimen (縮緬)’.
In this video, I used some cotton quilting fabric, hand sewing thread (size 30) and a general hand sewing needle. You can use a sewing machine too.
If you’re making a larger bag, it would be a good idea to add some interfacing.

Here are the photos of vintage patchwork bags (Source: Tokyo Museum Collection)

Here are the measurements I used in this video:
The outer panels (x4): A:B:C = 5cm : 20cm : 15cm
(The actual size of fabric including 1cm seam allowance around it: A=9cm, B=23.5cm, C=16.3cm — Please make sure that you don’t simply add 2cm to each length as this pattern involves an angled side. You’ll need to draw the seam allowance 1cm outside of each lines.)
The inner side panel: (Dx4) x E = 28cm : 10.5cm
(The actual size of fabric including 1cm seam allowance was 10cmx12.5cm.)
The inner bottom panel DxD = 7cm x 7cm
(The actual size including seam allowance: 9cm x 9cm)
The string casing (x2) (Dx2) x 3-4cm = 14cm x 3cm
(The actual size including seam allowance: 16cm x 5cm - the width of the casing may need to be adjusted depending on the thickness of your strings)
The strings (x2) Dx4 + 20cm = 48cm (0.7cm width)

The internal bag (中袋)is often made differently to what I made. I have put the photo of the different style on my instagram page. I hope to show you how to make it in the future in another video!
