http://www.emc.org/desert-orthopedic-... Did you know that there are 29 bones, 29 joints, 123 ligaments, 34 muscles and 48 nerves in your hand? It’s no wonder that a significant number of all ortho-related emergency visits and sports injuries are related to the hand and wrist. In this brief video about common hand injuries and chronic hand pain concerns, Dr. Stephen O’Connell, chairman of the Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center (EDOC) and Director of Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery, provides insight into various approaches to resolving hand-related diseases and injuries including hand pain troubles coming from strains, fractures, tumors, nerves and vascular problems. Among the most common is carpal tunnel syndrome – Dr. O’Connell walks us through some conservative treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome then delves into more involved approaches including carpel tunnel surgery – which takes roughly 5-6 minutes! Dr. O’Connell provides an overview of that process and recovery. Arthritis is also a common cause of hand pain and he provides an overview of why it’s such a pervasive problem and potential treatments – from non-surgical to surgical treatments, including joint replacement surgery – a hand surgery with excellent outcomes that should be reserved for people with intolerable pain.
