Despite much of the artwork regarding her, Hypatia was in her 60s when she was killed by a Christian mob.

She had enjoyed a rather prosperous position as a teacher and scholar in Alexandria, thriving in a male-dominated academia.

The disagreements between Cyril and Orestes can be boiled down to Cyril trying to assert his authority by challenging the traditional secular power of the Roman Prefect. Orestes, as the representative of the Emperor, was concerned that the Bishop was encroaching on his civil responsibilities.

Hypatia was caught in the middle of this conflict, and as a pagan, which brought hostility from the burgeoning group of Christians in the city, backed by Emperor Theodosius’s anti-pagan efforts. As the church gained power, many pagans converted, except for Hypatia.

Ironically, despite the fact that she was murdered by a Christian mob, at least in part because she promoted Neoplatonist ideas, some of her teachings would eventually influence Christian doctrine. One of her students, Synesius, became a Christian bishop, and some scholars say that his earlier Platonic studies influenced the church’s doctrine of the Holy Trinity.
