STORYLINE

Experts from an international group opposed to the spread of nuclear weapons arrived in Pakistan on Sunday for talks on non-proliferation.

The two officials from the Nuclear Suppliers' Group held talks on Monday with Foreign Ministry officials.

The ministry said it was an 'exploratory visit.'

The NSG is a group of 44 nuclear supplier countries which seeks to contribute to non-proliferation through the implementation of guidelines for nuclear exports, particularly for sensitive dual-use equipment that could be used for nuclear weapons.

An official from the Pakistan Foreign Office has said Pakistan wanted to join the group to promote non-proliferation.

The Islamic nation became a nuclear power in 1998 when it carried out underground nuclear tests.

The NSG approached Pakistan in early March about a visit shortly after Pakistani Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed finally acknowledged the country's top nuclear scientist, A.Q. Khan, had given centrifuges to Iran.

Once revered as the nation's nuclear godfather, the disgraced scientist has been held under house arrest at his home in Islamabad since December 2003 after making the admissions.
