Winchester is a local government district with city status in Hampshire, England. The district is named after its main settlement of Winchester, which is where the council is based and is also the county town of Hampshire. It was named the capital by King Alfred the Great and remained so until the Norman invasion of 1066. After the Norman Conquest, Winchester declined in influence and London became the center of government.
