Today we’re exploring a historic state park nestled on the southwest edge of Lake Tahoe. Please join me as we explore the magnificent trails and beaches of DL Bliss State Park.

This park boasts beautiful soft sand beaches including Lester Beach and Calawee Cove. The historic Rubicon Point Lighthouse here was built beginning in 1916 for $900, and the original keeper was paid just $180 a year. When built, this lighthouse had the highest elevation of any lighthouse in the US, standing at 6,300 feet above sea level.

In Balancing Rock Nature Trail at the northwest section of the park, you’ll find a gentle 1/2 mile loop that Lake Tahoe visitors have been enjoying for over 100 years. Along with great views of Rubicon Peak and the vibrant Jeffrey Pines, you’re treated to numerous large granite boulders along the tail's dirt path. The highlight of this area is the giant “Balancing Rock” standing over 20 feet tall with a top section weighing over 130 tons.
