This week, we’re honoring another sun goddess, Xihe from China, who carries the sun across the cosmos on her chariot with help from her 10 suns/sons. She represents the strong balance between light and dark as her chariot crosses all continents and moves from dawn to dusk.

Xihe (pronounced Shee-heh) was the mother of 10 suns who took the form of 3-legged crows and lived in a mystical tree named Fusang. These mythical beasts originated in China, but spread throughout Eastern and Central Asia, where we also find similar solar deities who drive the sun across the sky. Each morning, Xihe would choose one of her ten sons to accompany her in her carriage which was driven by a team of horses… or in another variation of her myth, it was a team of dragons!

In one of her better known stories, all ten of Xihe’s children once flew out of Fusang at the same time and the intensity of their combined heat threatened to burn the whole world as they traveled across the sky.

Xihe’s husband, King Di Jun, called on Houyi, the Lord Archer to save the world from his children. Houyi tried to reason with the suns, but they did not listen to him so he had no choice but to shoot them down. Eventually, only one sun remained and the king and Xihe pleaded with Houyi to spare the last sun’s life so humankind would not have to live in cold and darkness.

Through this myth, Xihe is actually the originator of one of the most beloved celebrations in China, the Mid-Autumn Festival. After Houyi saved the world, he became king and was gifted with an elixir of immortality. However, he became corrupted by power and his tyrannical ways threatened the people. So before he could drink the elixir, his wife Chang’e, drank it to prevent him from becoming immortal. She then ascended to become the Moon goddess and the Mid-Autumn Festival is dedicated to Chang’e for her self-less actions.

Xihe symbolizes a strong equilibrium between light and dark, so you can call on her when you want to become more balanced. Equally powerful are her themes of strength, illumination, and intensity so you can draw on her energy when you’re in need of any of those qualities to feel more confident and brilliant!
