I selected these poems from nearly 1800 written by the unparalleled American author Emily Dickinson. Her unique voice and disregard for poetic rules set her far apart from contemporary tastes. Dickinson’s subjects include death, unhappiness, and the loss of a hunger for life, but also of hope, flowers, birds, bees, and the beauty of life in nature. I like her poetry for its simplicity and mystery.

Few of her poems were published in her lifetime, and all anonymously. After her death in 1886, Dickinson’s family found her many hand-sewn books of poetry; unfortunately these suffered very heavy editorial revisions when adapting the handwritten poems for publication. Dickinson’s poems are untitled. They are numbered for reference--but that numbering was also subject editorial opinions on chronology. This can be very confusing! The numbers I’m reading you before each poem were assigned by Thomas H. Johnson in 1955. I’ve noticed this collection is still the most often used, however there are more modern collections made from her manuscripts that preserve more of Dickinson’s own choices.
