Seed dormancy is the state in which seed is unable to germinate, even under ideal growing conditions (Merriam-Webster). Because dormancy can be broken by most ideal growing conditions (different and specific for each species), the seeds germinate when they are the most likely to flourish.
physical dormancy', or 'hard seededness', where seeds are prevented from germinating by a water-impermeable seed coat, is viewed as a dormancy mechanism.One of the types of primary dormancy is physical dormancy (also called exogenous dormancy). Seeds with physical dormancy have hard seed coats that do not allow the seed to absorb water. It occurs in only a few plant families, but is very common in the legume family.
The dormancy of seeds with hard seed coats sometimes can be broken by heat. An important natural agent for breaking dormancy of seeds of some species with hard seed coats is heat from fire or insolation.
