Описание к видео CAIR Slams Supreme Court Travel Ban Decision

(26 Jun 2018) The Council on American-Islamic Relations hammered the Supreme Court's travel ban decision, saying it gives the Trump administration "a free hand to reinject discrimination against a particular faith back into our immigration system."
The Supreme Court upheld Trump's ban on travel from several mostly Muslim countries, rejecting a challenge that it discriminated against Muslims or exceeded his authority.
"Unfortunately, as a nation, we still have a long way to go when it comes to equal protection and living the American ideals," Awad said.
The 5-4 decision Tuesday is the court's first substantive ruling on a Trump administration policy, and the president quickly tweeted his reaction: "Wow!"
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, joined by his four conservative colleagues.
Roberts wrote that presidents have substantial power to regulate immigration. He also rejected the challengers' claim of anti-Muslim bias.
But he was careful not to endorse either Trump's provocative statements about immigration in general or Muslims in particular.
"The struggle continues," Awad said. "Mass mobilization, political awareness and political organizing have been the tools to create change," he said.
The travel ban has been fully in place since December, when the justices put the brakes on lower court rulings that had ruled the policy out of bounds and blocked part of it from being enforced.
In a dissent she summarized in court, Justice Sonia Sotomayor said, "History will not look kindly on the court's misguided decision today, nor should it."
Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan also dissented.
The policy applies to travelers from five countries with overwhelmingly Muslim populations — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. It also affects two non-Muslim countries, blocking travelers from North Korea and some Venezuelan government officials and their families.
