A tragic road accident on the morning of Vijaya Dashami, October 2, in #Silchar’s Meherpur area turned violent after an enraged mob allegedly set a vehicle on fire and clashed with police.

The incident occurred near the Meherpur Shiv Mandir when a Scorpio SUV, reportedly part of the Border division, lost control and collided with a stationary truck parked on a culvert. A pedestrian caught between the two vehicles was fatally crushed on the spot.

Soon after, a large crowd gathered and, in a fit of rage, torched the Scorpio SUV involved in the accident. Efforts by police and fire brigade officials to douse the flames were met with resistance. Locals, including a group of agitated youths, obstructed the emergency teams and demanded that the vehicle be left to burn as a mark of protest.

Senior officials including SSP Numal Mahatta and ASP Subrata Sen rushed to the scene. However, tensions escalated when a scuffle broke out between the police and the protestors. The volatile crowd also reportedly manhandled some personnel in the attempt to prevent the fire from being put out.

While the situation was brought under partial control, the atmosphere in the area remained tense for hours. Additional security forces were deployed to prevent further violence.

The identity of the deceased pedestrian has not yet been officially released. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, including the causes of the accident and the subsequent violence.
