What Happens When You Stop Taking Thyroid Medication?

Описание к видео What Happens When You Stop Taking Thyroid Medication?

What happens to your body if you stop taking thyroid medication? For the first 3-4 weeks you probably won't notice much of a difference at all. This is because T4 thyroid hormone (the most common thyroid medication) has long half life of 7 days. This means it stays in your system for a total of about 35 days. T3 thyroid hormone, for comparison, has a half life of about 1 day so it's gone from your system in a total of 5 days.

After 4-6 weeks you will start to feel the effects and you may start to experience hypothyroid or low thyroid symptoms.

These symptoms will get worse until about week 6-8 when your thyroid gland starts to come back online. At this point your thyroid will be able to produce some thyroid hormone on its own to whatever level its capable of.
