(3 Feb 2018) Hundreds took part in a rally in Athens, organised by the far-right Golden Dawn party on Saturday to mark the 22nd anniversary of the 1996 Imia crisis that brought Greece and Turkey to the brink of war.
Demonstrators held torches and waved Greek and party flags as they marched from Golden Dawn's main office in northeast Athens to the nearby Ministry of Defence.
In central Athens, meanwhile, counter-demonstrators gathered near a monument commemorating three Greek navy officers who lost their lives when their helicopter crashed near one of the two Imia islets occupied by Turkish forces at the height of the crisis in January 1996.
Protesters marched towards the Golden Dawn rally, but the two demonstrations were separated by a wall of police buses.
In 1996, it took the intervention of then-US President Bill Clinton to prevent an escalation leading to an unprecedented war between two NATO allies.
Turkey has disputed the sovereignty of the Imia islets (Kardak, in Turkish) which, like many other Greek islands of varying sizes, lie close to the Turkish coast.
