Women and girls face a heightened risk of violence, including sexual and gender-based violence, during and after floods. Displacement, overcrowded shelters, and breakdown of social structures can create an environment where GBV can thrive.

The March 2024 floods in Nairobi left several women sexually violated. The Scottish Government funding for floods victims in Nairobi’s informal settlements enabled survivors such as Emelda (not real name), to rebuild their lives and face the future with dignity.

Here is Emelda’s experience during the floods and the medical and psychosocial support provided by the Wangu Kanja Foundation, the Oxfam partner, and project implementing organization in Nairobi with the Scottish Government's funding for the floods-affected families.
