The 1978-79 hockey cards weren't the most exciting ever made, but it was definitely another exciting season for the Montreal Canadiens, as they won their 4th consecutive Stanley Cup. The Canadiens had a record of 52-17-11 for 115 points and finished 2nd overall, 1 point behind the New York Islanders. In the playoffs, the Canadiens swept the Toronto Maple Leafs, got by the Boston Bruins in 7 games (the deciding game had the infamous too many men on the ice penalty by the Bruins in the waning moments of the 3rd period that led to Guy Lafleur's tying goal, followed by Yvon Lambert's overtime winner) and beat the New York Rangers in 5 games.
It was the final season for 3 Canadiens Hall of Famers: Ken Dryden, Yvan Cournoyer and Jacques Lemaire. Coach Scotty Bowman also decided to leave the team after his 5th Stanley Cup championship to become the coach and general manager of the Buffalo Sabres.
The regular cards in the 1978-79 set include a rather plain design, but the All-Star cards feature a design that is almost identical to one that was used on some cards in Donruss' series 2 set featuring the rock group Kiss. In the Topps hockey set, players who were All-Stars did not get a 2nd card made of them; the All-Star notation was included on the front of their regular cards. Since O-Pee-Chee produced separate All-Star cards, the company removed the All-Star notation from the players' regular cards, leaving a big blank space above the photo, which gave those cards a bit of a strange appearance.
The backs of the All-Star cards form the puzzle that you see at the end of the video. Since Ken Dryden and Larry Robinson are featured in that puzzle, I included it in the video.
The music in the video is the instrumental version of "I Was Made For Lovin' You" by Kiss, which was a big hit in 1979.
