Dr. Kristina Hill's research examines the implications of rising sea levels for cities, especially as a driver of rising groundwater - since very few US cities have considered that impact yet. She provides strategic advice to public agencies and private organizations who want to adapt to climate change while supporting biodiversity and social justice.

Kristina works primarily in the San Francisco Bay area. Her research group recently produced a map of depth to groundwater in the SF Bay Area, a study of contaminated sites that may be affected by rising groundwater, a cost estimate for regional adaptation to sea level rise, and a proposal for urban mixed-used neighborhoods that would be adapted to flooding from rising seas and rising groundwater. Kristina's research team will continue to develop proposals for how new housing districts could work with new infrastructure in vulnerable areas, protecting lower-income residents from the impacts of freshwater flooding while helping to bring private financing into coastal adaptation.
