किडनी की बीमारी में Biopsy कब करानी चाहिए | What is Kidney Biopsy Test | Dr Puru Dhawan
To provide the most accurate treatment, it's crucial to assess how well the kidneys are functioning. In certain situations, a kidney biopsy becomes the only reliable method to examine the extent of the damage in detail. However, the idea of a biopsy can often cause fear or anxiety among patients. In this video, Dr. Puru Dhawan simplifies the concept of kidney biopsy, explaining how this important diagnostic tool helps when the root cause of kidney damage isn't clearly known. He sheds light on when it's genuinely necessary, when it can be avoided, and how it guides doctors in tailoring the best treatment plan.

A kidney biopsy is a medical procedure where a tiny tissue sample is taken from the kidney and analyzed under a microscope. This helps identify the nature of the damage—whether it stems from infection, inflammation, autoimmune activity, or rare kidney disorders. The biopsy offers a deeper insight that regular blood tests or imaging may not provide.

Biopsy is usually not required when the damage is clearly linked to known conditions like long-term high blood pressure or poorly controlled diabetes. For instance, if someone has elevated BP and their ultrasound shows smaller-sized kidneys, the connection to hypertension is apparent. Similarly, if sugar levels stay between 200 and 400 mg/dL and HbA1c is higher than 7.5, yet the kidneys appear normal in size, doctors can safely conclude diabetes is the cause—no biopsy needed.

When the cause of kidney damage does not align with the usual suspects like BP or diabetes, a biopsy may be necessary. For example, in a young person—say 18 years old—who has normal kidney size and no history of diabetes or hypertension, other less common conditions are considered. Initially, blood investigations such as ANA, VMA, or genetic tests are conducted. If these fail to reveal a diagnosis, a biopsy helps uncover rare conditions like autoimmune diseases or unexplained inflammation affecting the kidneys.
