I joined the company in early 2013, when we had about 250 employees, the company now has 6000 employees. So it's grown a lot in six and a half years, for every 75 to 100 people who apply, there's only one person that gets hired. So it's a very competitive process.

One of the things that people need to know is that, for some companies like Airbnb, you have to prove in your application, that you have shown a commitment to the core values of the company.
In the case of Airbnb, we asked people to tell us, how long have they been part of our community? Have they been a guest or a host in our community? If someone's applying, and they've actually never used Airbnb as a guest, or they've never been an Airbnb host, it doesn't mean we won't hire them, but it means they are competitively disadvantaged compared to somebody who actually has all things being equal.

It's a second thing to know is, that you're probably competing with some of the most some of the best people in the world for the position for a company like Airbnb. So you better actually do something that helps distinguish yourself, whether that's actually amplifying how Airbnb has been a critical part of your life and why you like it too much, or whether it's actually showing a problem solving ability. That sounds very relevant to what Airbnb would need for that particular position, or whether it's actually taking the Airbnb core value of belong everywhere.

Then actually showing how you've shown up in your own life with that mission. That's important, because actually just filling out an application and doing it the way I'm thinking I'm going to answer the questions just like everybody else would, doesn't distinguish you.

If you're going for a technical position, you'll actually be given some homework assignment. To senior leadership position, you'll also get a homework assignment. The interviews will include core values, interviews, so they'll be two people who have nothing to do with the department you're going to be working in interviewing you to understand whether your core values are congruent with the company's.

I think you'll find that people will ask questions that like my favorite interview question is, “what's the number one way you're misperceived in the workplace?” I find that that question really is a great icebreaker to help people actually be authentic in the interview.
