Technical Tips- Saw Chain Anatomy

Oregon's Sr. Technical Services Expert, Glenn, explains chainsaw chain anatomy. He will discuss the drive links, tie straps, rivets, cutters, depth gauge (rakers or drags), side plate, top plate, gullet, and overall relationship between all the components of the saw chain.
He will share how to identify end of life of saw chain and various versions.

Chisel-chains (shown) are fast and efficient when cutting through wood, but are not so forgiving in dirty and sandy conditions, and may need to be sharpened sooner.
Semi-chisel and micro-chisel spreads working corner over radius and stay sharper slightly longer, but won't cut as fast and efficient as chisel-chain.
Chamfer-chisel is more forgiving in working conditions, but is not as fast or efficient, but it will stay sharper a little longer.

Pitch is identified as any 3 rivets from the center line of those rivets divided by 2.
Gauge of chain must match gauge of bar.
Pitch of chain must match nose components on bar as well as drive sprocket on saw.
