Administrators of an extensive historic military vehicle collection housed in the hills above the Silicon Valley planned to mark Veteran's Day by signing over the tanks, missile launchers, self-propelled guns and historic firearms to a Massachusetts-based nonprofit that preserves and displays the machines that helped build the world and helped keep it free.
Until now, the massive collection has been stored in seven storage sheds and visited only under privately arranged tours. Over the next few months, mechanics will be restoring the vehicles, preparing them for a cross-country trip to New England where The Collins Foundation plans to display them at its Stow, Mass., headquarters.
Some of the tanks, about 80, will be auctioned off to help pay for the transfer, said a Collins Foundation representative.
The military vehicles and machinery were collected by former Silicon Valley engineer Jacques Littlefield, a Stanford University graduate who worked at Hewlett Packard before focusing on his true passion, collecting and restoring military vehicles. His acquired his first tanks in 1983, and by the middle of the 1990's the collection included examples from almost all historically significant land battles of the last half-century, according to the non-profit Military Vehicle Technology Foundation that currently is in charge of the collection.
The breadth of the collection, which includes about 240 vehicles, is broad.
There are military vehicles from the U.S., Russia, Germany, England, France, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, and Israel. There's a Sherman tank and a Striker tank destroyer. The oldest armored military vehicle in the collection is a World War I era M1917 light tank. While some are quite warn, many have been meticulously restored.
