On Christmas Eve 2020, Cargill UMC in Janesville, Wis., will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its first Sanctuary worship service in its present church building.
To honor the occasion, we will re-create the procession that was held in 1960, when worshipers departed from the old church site at Court and Franklin streets in downtown Janesville and headed to the present church at 2000 Wesley Avenue.
We'll make the same procession this Dec. 24. We will meet at 6:30p downtown, at what is now the parking lot of the YMCA. Once we arrive in the Cargill UMC parking lot, about 7p, we will hold an outdoor Christmas Eve service. Worshipers will remain in their cars and listen on 87.9 FM.
At the conclusion of the brief service, all will be invited to step out of their cars and hold aloft a light as we sing "Silent Night" together. The Cargill choir will be present to lead us. You're invited to bring an electronic candle, flashlight, phone light, etc., as we sing together. We'll have glo-sticks available.
Following the outdoor service, those who are interested may enter the church's West Entrance and be guided by an usher to pass through the Sanctuary and receive Holy Communion. We will observe physical distancing and allow persons to enter only with members of their household. Christmas carols will be playing on the organ, but no indoor worship service will be held.
We pray this special Christmas Eve observance brings joy as we conclude a difficult year and look forward to the blessings and opportunities of 2021.
