The Lusaka Environmental Health University Executive Chairman Jackie Phiri has called on Environmental Health Practitioners in the country to add utmost professional integrity and credibility to the profession and bring about a more cohesive and responsive work style in the way they implement environmental health management systems.
Mr Phiri said that Environmental Health Practitioners must not fall into the temptation of unwarranted immoral vices that will dent the profession but instead they should fully exempt themselves and reclaim the promotion of environmental public health and safety in the country.
Speaking during the Environmental Health Conference held under theme ‘Repositioning Environmental Health for Enhanced Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals’ Mr Phiri stated that the conference and theme in Zambia cannot come at a better time than now, given the various environmental health intricacies that environmental health professionals in Zambia are currently facing and through this conference there is hope that a number of hindrances attributed to the non recognition role to environmental health will be examined and unlocked, and this unlocking will translate into actual implementation.
Mr Phiri disclosed that in the recent past environmental practitioners have been caught up in a web of invisible control, institutional expectations and perhaps professional disorientation in the delivery of environmental health services, perhaps this is what has led the the Republican President Hakainde Hichilema at a special interview on HOT FM on 19th August to have posed a very pertinent question stating that environmental health practitioners need to be very certain with their management styles, and must have the ability to influence colleagues, subordinates, superiors and society in a very positive way in order to pertain set targets.
