In early 1943, U.S. Army Air Forces bombers began conducting daylight bombing raids deep over German-held territory during World War II.

American air doctrine relied on tight bomber formations for mutual defense, believing concentrated firepower could repel enemy fighters. However, escort fighters at the time lacked the range needed to accompany bombers all the way to their targets.

Once escort aircraft were forced to turn back, German fighters attacked the bomber formations freely. Some missions suffered catastrophic losses, with more than 20 percent of aircraft destroyed in a single raid.

These heavy losses forced an urgent shift in strategy and led to the rapid deployment of long-range escort fighters such as the P-51 Mustang. With extended range and superior performance, air superiority over Europe soon began to change.
