As a couple, you can qualify to apply for common law sponsorship. A common law relationship is one where a couple has lived together continuously for not less than a year in a marriage-like relationship. To qualify for common law sponsorship application, the immigration department will require proof of having lived together for at least one year. You may be required to provide documents such as lease agreements or rental contracts that show both partners were on a lease for a period of over a year. Phone bills and utility bills that have both your names and go to the same address can also act as evidence to show that you’ve been living together as a couple. Other documents such as joint bank accounts or insurance policies that show the address can also be used as evidence when applying for a common law sponsorship. The immigration authorities will be looking for sufficient evidence that the couple has indeed lived together.
