The Lancashire Witch was built by Robert Stephenson in 1828 for the proposed L&M railway, but when completed worked Bolton & Leigh Railway. The original design had a single firebox and two flues with a complex arrangement of pipework which proved too difficult to make. The final version had two furnace flue tubes which joined together at the front into a single chimney. The cylinders were placed on each side of the boiler that inclined at about forty-five degrees. This allowed all the axles to be fully sprung. The engine was also made for expansive work driven by bevel gears on the rear axle. Stockton & Darlington Stephenson's Rocket 1829, delivered to the railway on the 25th September the same year. The engine was mounted on 6 Robert Wilson two-part wheels which were fully sprung, cylinders at 36 degrees; the firebox was an Utube Trevithick style with a return flue. The expansive worked mushroom valves on this engine were operated by cams to raise and lower them, cutting off the steam to the cylinder valves and allowing them to work expansively
