Hotel Star Rating in Mallorca - Spain - Majorca

I received a message from Barbara:
"I often notice the star rating as you pass the hotels. Over here, if a hotel is rated 5 star it usually means high end luxury. Whereas on the continent many mediocre hotels are given 5 stars because they have a swimming pool & evening entertainment. I'm wondering if that is still the case as we tend to go on cruises these days."
Well that got me thinking!
