Finally after 50 years in this world, I was finally going to get to explore and play in Rhodes!

But getting there was no plain sailing...

The bad weather that had been predicated had arrived, and my cameraman flight to Mthatha was diverted to East London! He finally made it BUT instead of getting on the road at 08:00, we only left Mthatha at 14:00, and a very late and dark arrival in Rhodes.

But the cool part about arriving in the dark is that you have no idea what the area looks like or what you are getting - it's a lot like Christmas morning - but we were gifted a gem of a spot in Alpine Swift Trails!

Owners Hylton and Sunelle Dunn are amazing - such kind and generous people. We were booked in for 3 nights at one of their two wild camping spots but with our late arrival, they accommodated us in their traditional B&B type accommodation.
As it would turn out, it ended up being our base for the next night too as freezing cold weather saw us snow chasing up Naudes Nek Pass and on to Tenahead Lodge.

Who would have thought we would see snow in South Africa in November but we did - we honestly could not have scripted this better - and then to be blessed with a perfect final day so that we could finally get to wild camp down at their River site.

Honestly, what an incredible location...idyllic on the banks of the Bell River under the willow tree that's fallen over. It's postcard perfect...

There is just no ways that two days is enough time - you need 10 days at least - but I can't recommend highly enough visiting Rhodes and the region, and staying with Hylton and Sunelle!
