Are a UK registered Nurse / International Nurse thinking of becoming a Nurse Specialist ?
The basic requirement to becoming a Nurse Specialist in the UK is to be registered with the NMC either as adult Nurse, children's nurse, Midwife or Mental health Nurse. You need to have at least 18 months to 2 years post registration experience.
Some specialist Nursing roles require specific post registration qualification at degree, post graduate diploma or master's level : for example Specialist Community Public Health Nursing which include Health Visiting, School Nursing, Occupational Health Nursing, General Practice Nursing and District Nursing.
There are other specialist roles that does not require specific qualification. You experience in the relevant field. You need to show willingness to to learn and adapt . There will be the opportunity for you to train on the job and also be sent on training courses in order for you to be able to do your job .
It is important to keep looking out for specialist nurse roles and keep applying. If at first you don't succeed, keep trying as it is competitive but doable.
Specialist Nurses are employed on agenda for change band 6. There are some roles that are band 7 and above. Band 6 annual Salary starts from £ 31,365 rising based on experience to £37,890 by 8 years of experience. Band 7 salary starts from £ 38,890 annual salary and rising to £44,503 at 8 years of experience in same band. Bear in mind Specialist Nurses work Monday to Fridays so there is no enhancement in salary as compared to Nurses working Saturdays, Sundays and nights.
