For more than a decade, the murder of prominent Florida State University law professor Dan Markel has captivated public attention, as prosecutors have unraveled a complex murder-for-hire plot linked to the professor’s ex-wife’s family. The latest chapter in this ongoing saga unfolded on Thursday, when a jury found 75-year-old Donna Adelson—Markel's mother-in-law—guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder.

Markel, 41, was tragically shot on July 18, 2014, in the driveway of his Tallahassee home. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries 14 hours later. The case has remained a high-profile legal story, capturing attention through news articles, documentaries, and even a podcast.

The conviction of Donna Adelson marks the fifth in a series of trials tied to Markel's death. In 2023, her son, Charles Adelson, a Fort Lauderdale periodontist, was convicted for orchestrating and funding the murder. He is currently serving a life sentence.

Prosecutors also secured convictions for three others involved in the plot: Katherine Magbanua, a former girlfriend of Charles Adelson; Sigfredo Garcia, Magbanua's partner and the alleged gunman; and Luis Rivera, a former gang leader who helped carry out the crime.

Donna Adelson’s reaction to the verdict was emotional, with the 75-year-old sobbing and crying out after the decision was read in the Leon County Courthouse. She now faces a likely sentence of life in prison, a somber end to a tragic and complicated case that has lingered in the public eye for years.
