MEADOWS MILL c. 1830 - Sometimes called “Alabama’s Falling Water"
Imagine living in a structure that was built before the civil war in a very unique setting. Meadows Mill was purchased by John & Ashely Marsh in 2007 and they have worked for over 12 years with many craftsmen to renovate this amazing structure in a very unique way. This original structure boasts hand-worked heart pine beams, mortise and tendon (pegged) construction with wide heart pine floors and an original stone dam. There is plenty of room for a guest with the addition of an 1850 guest house that was the parson of the 1st Baptist Church of Salem. This property is one of the most unique properties in the state of Alabama.
By building a new house on the exterior of the mill and installing new wiring, plumbing, HVAC, adding spray foam insulation and then installing historically accurate siding, again this has retained the beauty of the original mill and added all the newest systems and efficiencies.
Some unique features are the ability to control a 10-foot waterfall under the house which has inspired the description of this mill as "Alabama’s Falling Water" which give a nod to the famous Falling Water created by Frank Loyd Wright. Amazing outdoor spaces and fire pits were created with the 1920’s state park theme in the choice of woods and scale and proportion.
All of the stone used in the construction of property the custom-built chimneys and retaining walls were collected from the existing property. The main house has a "Lord Rumford" full masonry fireplace and the guest cottage has a custom build full masonry fireplace. A large back deck overlooking the falls was constructed in with large timbers and original design columns to provide a large and seamless outdoor space to enjoy and entertain. A full kitchen was installed with a Thermador stove and refrigerator to provide incredible chefs style cooking experience.
This entire property was designed for energy efficiency, historic appearance and to have the future ability to add hydro turbines to produce power if a new owner desired this capability.
