Estuary Depositional Environments & Stratigraphy | GEO GIRL

Описание к видео Estuary Depositional Environments & Stratigraphy | GEO GIRL

Estuary depositional environments are those where sediment is transported and deposited by esuarine processes, in other words the combined effect of wave, tidal, and fluvial (river) input. But did you know there are different types of estuaries? In this video, I go over estuarine deposition, processes, sedimentary structures, and stratigraphy. The types of estuaries are coastal plain estuaries that form by river erosion, bar-built estuaries that form by barrier bar formation, tectonic estuaries that form by tectonic activity, and fjord estuaries that form in glacial-carved fjords. They are all typically transgressive rather than regressive. Regressive shorelines are those in which the basin margin moves basin-ward and these typically form deltas. Whereas transgressive shorelines are those where the basin margin moves inland due to a heavy wave and tidal influence that is stronger than the river influence. The geometry of estuaries and the bedforms, such as bars, that form in them depends on the relative wave, tide, and river influence. Estuaries are dominated by hypopycnal flows (when the inflow water is less dense than the basin water), whereas deltas are dominated by hyperpycnal flows (the inflow is more dense than the basin water). See delta video for more on such flow types:    • Delta Depositional Environments & Str...  . I then discuss the transgressive and regressive sequences that form in the cycle from estuarine to fluvial, deltaic processes. I close out the video by going over the stratigraphy of estuary facies and how to recognize an estuarine environment in the rock record. Hope you enjoy! ;)
