The FTdx5000MP comes from the factory with 5 roofing filters, including a 300Hz, a 600Hz, a 3kHz, a 6kHz, and a 15kHz. I have long wished to have a 1.2kHz SSB filter, to combat QRM from a station that decides to start talking 2kHz or less away from my QSO.

Years ago, I installed a 2.1kHz into my FT-920. It breathed new line into that transceiver. With that filter, and careful use of shift and width, I was about to combat interference from an adjacent frequency quite well. I also installed a 250Hz CW filter. The filters were both from INRAD. Those fillers are the reason I was able to use the FT-920 for 20 years, without being blown away enough by another transceiver to replace it.

The FTdx5000MP is the transceiver that finally became the replacement. But I’ve always wished it had a more narrow SSB filter. Since there is a 300Hz CW filter, I never use the 600Hz CW filter. I thought I would remove the 600Hz filter and replace it with a narrow SSB filter. INRAD doesn’t have a 1.2kHz, but they have a 1.8kHz. I ordered it.

In this video, I show how to install the 1.8kHz roofing filter and I perform some initial on-air testing. There will be a subsequent video where I focus solely on how effective the filter is at helping battle interference from an adjacent frequency.
