Here is the full version of the ancient Lai Haraoba song, Nongthang Leima Sheishak in the traditional teaching fashion.
Oja Khangembam Mangi, Pena Khongba of Manipur. Song: "Nongthang Leima Sheishak" (Tung Tung Naro) full song. followed by the song, "Soraren" (song to the sky god Soraren). This is an example of traditional teacher student teaching session, held at the home of the master musician Oja Mangi. The great value of this version is Oja recites and plays the most proper version and singing playing style which is now endangered and nearly lost.
This song is also popularly known as the "Tung Tung Tung Naro" from the words of its chorus. It is about young courtship, lovelorn desires, and the flirtation of the two young gods Panthoibi and Nongpokningthou. The song is full of innuendo and metaphor. The phrase "Tung naro", is a sort of slang that translates to mean, "Let's flirt and hang out." It is a dance song created for Lai Haraoba. At the end of the song Oja gives a treat by singing the companion song known as, Soraren.
The song has recently been made popular again by the traditional Manipur folk singer Mangka and Laihui. Mangka has learned the song from Oja Mangi himself.
