Kyle of Lochalsh & Kyleakin (A Short Travel Guide): Explore the Gateways to the Isle of Skye

Описание к видео Kyle of Lochalsh & Kyleakin (A Short Travel Guide): Explore the Gateways to the Isle of Skye

Since the opening of the Skye Bridge, most motorists travelling to Skye pass through Kyle of Lochalsh in a flash, and the main road now bypasses Kyleakin entirely. However, these two villages, once joined by a vital ferry link, are well worth a stop, situated as they are in one of the most scenic corners of western Scotland. Indeed, they are a great base for exploring both Skye and Lochalsh peninsula on the mainland. The toll for the Skye Bridge has long since been abolished. You can now cross back and forth for free as many times as you like - apart from strong winds stop traffic and Skye is briefly a true island again. Whether arriving by road or rail, you're in for a treat.

In this short film you'll learn a little of the history of the two Kyles (the Norse King Haakon, the "saucy" Norse princess Mary, and the transformative arrival of the railway from Inverness) as well as stopping to try the local gin at the West Highland Distillers and a conversation with artist Stephen Gregory about his ongoing series of Kyle of Lochalsh pictures. Some of the area's attractions were closed during the time of filming due to the Covid 19 pandemic, but there was still plenty to enjoy. Can't wait to go back!
