In this video, Steve Caseley covers the Requirements Traceability Matrix, and why the RTM is the key tool for a project manager to ensure that everything gets done and properly validated. Project managers who want their projects to have exhaustive requirements, validation methods and WBS elements must master RTMs.

You can go out and purchase tools and resources for creating and managing a requirements traceability matrix, but your best bet is to start with a simple spreadsheet. That way, you can start simple, see the project as a whole, and incrementally increase the complexity of your requirements. First, list all the requirements a project has. The best method is to decompose top-level requirements into increasingly specific ones. Next, check that every requirement has a corresponding WBS element for assigning the work itself. Validation comes last, choosing what validation methods will correlate with each requirement. A spreadsheet can help track the matrix, and with a robust RTM, you can ensure every project gets done completely and validated perfectly.
