Russia's Vladimir Putin met with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico..

In his remarks, Putin said that Moscow has never opposed Ukraine’s possible membership in the European Union. He dismissed claims that Moscow was planning to attack Europe. He argued, according to Reuters, that with NATO expanding eastward, the alliance wants to take in the whole post-Soviet area, and Russia simply has to defend its interests. He also said that Ukrainian membership in NATO would have been unacceptable for Russia. Earlier, Fico talked about the criticism he faces from other EU countries due to his participation as the only EU leader in today’s Chinese event and the Victory Day parade in Moscow in May. He emphasized that he wanted to show respect to all victims of the Second World War. Fico repeatedly affirmed Slovakia’s commitment to the EU, but he expressed confusion over some of its decisions. He also called for normalizing economic relations with Russia and criticized Ukraine for attacking important gas infrastructure that carries Russian gas to Slovakia and Hungary.
