I made a lot of mistakes when renting my first apartment in college, so I put this video together to give you the top list of questions I wish I would have asked before renting my first apartment to make sure that you are getting the best deal.

1. What utilities or amenities are included?

Make sure to compare the ENTIRE cost of renting. If some utilities are included, it could make it worth spending a little bit more in rent. Also consider what amenities are important to you like a gym or pool.

2. How much does rent increase every year?

If you are renewing your lease, your rent should stay the same or only increase 2-3%. If it increases more than that every year, that could be something to consider if you plan on renting the same unit for more than 1 year. Our first apartment increased by over 25% the first year and definitely wasn't worth the extra money.

3. What is the maintenance turnaround time?

Make sure that the landlord or apartment manager can tell you what the maintenance turnaround time is and how you go about submitting maintenance requests.

4. What system is in place for maintenance emergencies?

One of the biggest perks of renting is that someone else deals with maintenance. Therefore, you want to know what constitutes a maintenance emergency and how fast they are handled. Make sure there is always someone available to deal with maintenance emergencies.

5. What appliances are included?

Our first apartment didn't have a dishwasher or central AC, and we didn't realize this until we moved in. We now know to ask about all appliances that matter to us!

6. When was the building built or last renovated?

It's not a make or break, but new buildings and newly renovated building tend to have less issues and less you have to deal with maintenance.
