Psychological Concepts for Developing a Strong Personality and Leadership – As per Dr. Arun K Shukla
Chief Mentor, Psychologist & Faculty Captain – La Militaire Academy
The Word Association Test (WAT) in the SSB is a powerful psychological tool designed to assess a candidate’s subconscious thinking patterns, personality traits, and Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs). The words shown are not random; they are carefully selected to evoke natural, immediate responses from candidates, reflecting their character, values, and emotional stability. Broadly, the words in WAT can be classified into different types, each serving a unique psychological purpose.
Positive Words: These words like success, courage, honesty allow candidates to showcase optimism, initiative, and leadership qualities. Psychologists assess whether the candidate can think constructively and relate positive attributes to real-life action.
Negative Words: Words such as failure, fear, problem test emotional control, resilience, and problem-solving skills. A candidate’s response should reflect optimism and the ability to turn challenges into opportunities.
Neutral Words: Words like book, table, road gauge creativity and mental alertness. They reveal whether a candidate can meaningfully connect everyday words to broader values or actions.
Abstract Words: Words such as freedom, justice, loyalty assess depth of thought, maturity, and moral outlook. These highlight how candidates perceive higher values of life and service.
Action-Oriented Words: Words like fight, win, achieve bring out initiative, determination, and dynamic personality traits essential for military leadership.
The psychological purpose of WAT is not about writing “good” or “correct” sentences but about reflecting one’s natural personality, adaptability, and mental conditioning. Assessors look for qualities like positivity, responsibility, confidence, courage, social adaptability, and balanced outlook. Thus, the variety of words ensures that a candidate’s subconscious reactions are tested across multiple dimensions of personality, making WAT a true mirror of inner character and officer potential.
